Sounds like a hoax to me. "Magnetic telegraphs?" The telegraph was invented in 1837, the year this book was written, but not put into use til 1839, according to Wikipedia.

I found your comments to be very interesting. We can never keep up with all that is going on. For example who would have ever thought Apple and Intel would be working together.
